Kyogen Carlson, American-born, of European descent, educated at the University of California at Berkeley, is a Buddhist priest trained in Soto Zen here in America. Ordained in 1972 by Roshi Jiyu-Kennet, the Abbess of Shasta Abbey, a Zen monastery in northern California, he received Inka (full authorization to teach) from her in 1978. Since 1982, together with his wife Gyokuko, Carlson Sensei, he has been Abbot of Dharma Rain Zen Center in Portland, Oregon and occasionally teaches Buddhist philosophy at the University of Portland and elsewhere.
